About our art
For us, contemporary painting is about giving a face to life around us, which develops continually. We artists are a part of floating and moving life, we are a part of this daily creation we live in. In this sense create is re-create!
We do not have strict conceptions or fixed ideas about our art to limit us. We prefer to use our daily experiences and the very moment of creation itself. This results in abstract as well as representational art in different techniques and materials. Creating modern art we see as an ongoing practice of making discoveries in colors, lines and forms on paper or canvas, in stone or ceramics.
Most of us live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, a small country by the sea. It is certain that the rich and long history of Dutch art painting also exists in our individual modern art; this influence is too strong for us to be able to avoid it. Sometimes you find it in the images and picture-language, other times in the atmosphere of our artworks. Also the damp sea climate of our country has its influence; as does our daily life and work in Amsterdam, with its history and its narrow old streets in the city center. There is another, a more recent inspiration concerning Amsterdam; the city has modernized during the last decades with new architecture and with new kinds of city designs. Both faces of Amsterdam, the old and the modern, offer us a lot of visual inspiration.
We are strongly aware of the influence of the many artists before our time and we are grateful to them. You find many of their quotes here on the website, so they survive in a way. It is the living tradition to accept and embrace art that has already come into our lives, by means of all the artworks in the museums and and images in the art books we have seen for many years.
In our individual creation of art it is our turn and our job to generate modern painting, graphic and sculptural art in a new visual language, to meet and reflect every presence; for time and human existence need to be expressed over and over again. There lies the direct connection between Art and Life, we believe.
